What is RGV Leadership?
RGV Partnership offers emerging and current business and community leaders from throughout the region a unique opportunity to develop their personal and professional leadership skills and learn about issue affecting the Valley through a 9-month educational program that promotes learning, discussion and debate. RGV Leadership also creates opportunities for building relationships with other growing leaders from around the region and challenges them to look for solutions to the region’s most pressing issues.
The program will work much like other leadership programs sponsored by city chambers of commerce. RGV Leadership sets itself apart in that it’s complete focus in regional and will specialize in bringing together people from throughout the entire Valley to look at issues and leadership through a wider lens.
Program & Objectives
RGV Leadership strives to fulfill five objectives:
- Identify and train emerging and current leaders in the 4-county Rio Grande Valley area.
- Building relationships that are collaborative, motivating, regional and long-lasting.
- Focus potential leaders onto the most current and important issues facing the RGV.
- Complete the program with a deeper understanding & appreciation of the RGV’s issues and challenges.
- Challenge leaders to apply their new skills and to be innovative in the RGV.
To accomplish these objectives, RGV Leadership will select 25 emerging or current leaders to participate in a 9-month program that will include a two-day retreat in September on South Padre Island, 8 day-long sessions over the next 8 months that will include assignments and a class and group projects. During legislative years it will also include a two-day trip to Austin.
Selection & Eligibility Criteria
Who should apply? Community leaders who want to expand their leadership skills, explore different learning experiences, those who desire to work and collaborate regionally, those who have demonstrated leadership and service, and those who want to build relationships across professional and county lines and are committed to the Valley. Completion of another leadership program is preferred, but not required. Also at the time of the August 1st deadline, applicants must:
- Be at least 28 years old
- Cannot be a candidate for public office
- Been a resident of the RGV for least two years
- Be willing and able to commit the required time necessary to complete program
Applicants will be chosen by an RGV Partnership selection committee. The class will reflect the geographic and cultural diversity of the RGV.
The time commitment will be significant, but so will be your take-away from this great program. It’s an important investment and RGV Leadership is based on involvement. The program involves a two-day, one night orientation retreat on South Padre Island September 26-27. After that, there will be one full-day session once a month (third Friday of every month). Regular Sessions will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
During a legislative session, the group will meet in Austin for its February session. Additionally, class members will have some assignments and time commitments during the month.
Missing more than 2 sessions during the program will disqualify you and immediately terminate your enrollment. Class members absent from the opening overnight session (orientation) will also be dropped from the program. Three late arrivals or early departures, or combination of the two, will be cause for automatic dismissal.
RGV Leadership is offered to participants at $1,500 in tuition. The tuition includes all program materials, snacks, meals, overnight accommodations during retreats and some transportation. Tuition is due in full by the first meeting, or it can be in paid in three installments with last payment due by the December meeting.
The application deadline is Friday, August 1, 2014. No exceptions to this requirement will be allowed. The inaugural RGV Leadership Class will be announced no later than Monday, August 18, 2014. You will be contacted via email or phone.
At least two letters of recommendation are required to be submitted with the application and there are some questions on the application that need some thought. Do not wait until deadline to complete the application. Husband and wives cannot attend simultaneously, and candidates for political office may not apply.
